What is the Social Programme?

Live Language wants to bring something more to its students than just language courses. That’s why we started a “Social Programme”. The idea consists of involving the students at Live Language in activities where they can learn not just a foreign language but also a culture.

We are used to organise one or two events per week such as:

  • Movie nights
  • Conversation groups
  • Trips to pubs
  • Lunches
  • Historical trips
  • Museums
  • Sports
  • Competitions (poetry, photos, pool, etc.)

Schedule of the Social Programme

September 2010

July and August 2010

The weekly activities

- Football match

- Chat Club

To see some of the presentations we made during our conversation groups, just click on the country you are interested in:    China - Saudi Arabia

Things to do

What to do in Glasgow...

Glasgow and Scotland have so much to offer and there is so much to do here that one visit is never enough.  You can see all that is going on in Glasgow at the local tourist Information website http://whatson.seeglasgow.com/

Here is a link to the latest Glasgow Diary that tells you what is going on for each of the 4 seasons http://www2.seeglasgow.com/diary/flash/glasgowdiary.html

Glasgow is a vibrant city that was European City of Culture in 1990, European City of Architecture and Design in 1999 and beat the competition to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. It hosts a wide range of museums (which are all free), art galleries, exhibitions and the city is well known for producing some world class rock music. It hosts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet not to mention its numerous theatres and concert venues. It is only 40 minutes from the capital – Edinburgh and 30 minutes from the start of the stunning Highlands. You therefore have the best of both the city and the remote highlands within easy access. Glasgow is well known for the warmth and hospitality of local people and it is this that makes Glasgow ‘the friendliest city in Scotland’.

Glasgow is...

  • In the Top 5 most visited cities in the UK
  • 1st place in Conde Nast Travel Magazine
  • No 2 in Guardian Travel Awards UK's favourite City
  • Unesco City of music
  • Glasgow was recently voted the UK's coolest city and the best base for students and twenty-somethings by the Big Issue.
  • Glasgow was also identified by Mercer Human Resource Consulting as the 'safest city in the UK and only surpassed by quality of life by London making it one of the top 60 places in the world to live'.

As well as the year-long calendar of festivals and events, you will be able to enjoy the largest shopping area outside of London;  superb cafes, bars and nightlife, and mouth-watering cuisine from all over the world: all within minutes walk from the city's parks and gardens.

Glasgow is surrounded by the UK's biggest National Park, and is within fast and easy traveling distance to Edinburgh and Scotland's many varied attractions. You can enjoy breathtaking scenery, taste free samples at whisky distilleries or enjoy the clean air and tranquility of a loch-side stroll. For the more active, you can go horse riding, play golf on a Championship course, enjoy the thrill of white water rafting or even experience the exhilaration of a sky dive.

In August 2009, Glasgow was the 12th city of the Creative Cities Network established by UNESCO at the end of 2004 to promote the social, economic and cultural development.

Glasgow is also home to...

The Burrell Collection: this impressive collection of about 8,000 items (tapestries, furniture, ceramics, stained glass and sculptures from Medieval Europe) was amassed by Sir William Burrell over 80 years of his life.

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra: one of Europe's leading symphony orchestras.

The Gallery of Modern Art: the second most visited contemporary art gallery outside London.

The Scottish Ballet: Scotland's national dance company.

The Scottish Opera: Scotland's premier opera company.

  • From the West Highland Line

The West Highland Line was recently voted “Best Rail Journey in the World” by Wanderlust magazine for the second year running – click here to see more about it. It runs from Glasgow to Mallaig three times a day (twice on Sundays), and it’s brilliant.

Homestay

Live Language offers host provider accommodation throughout the year.

Live Language staff arrange all of our Homestays this means our staff get to know our students prior to their arrival and are able to offer assistance and support after arrival. It is important to us and our students that we match students needs with Homestay families.

All our host providers are inspected regularly.

Standard Homestay - B&B and evening meal - £150 per week

Students may be sharing a room with one other person of the same sex, but with a different mother tongue.

Executive Homestay - Superior B&B with private room, evening meal and private bathroom - £230 per week

Self Catering Homestay - room only - from £95 per week.  Students may be sharing a room with one other person of the same sex, but a different mother tongue. Here, you live with a Homestay Host but you provide your own meals.

There are a number of other accommodations in Glasgow such as Glasgow School Of Art residences and Glasgow University which provide accommodation during summer months.  Unite provides accommodation year round. Live Language will not book these self-catering accommodations for you but we will help you by providing information about each accommodation so you may contact them to make your booking yourself. Please contact us if you require this information.

Homestay Hosts

We are always looking for good, reliable Homestay Hosts, who will welcome students into their home and provide them with a bed, evening meals and breakfast (as well as a warm welcome and friendly chat).  The benefits of accepting foreign students into your home extend to more than just the financial.  You will gain insight into other cultures, have an opportunity to practise your language skills and you might also gain a friend.

Live Language English School offers Homestay Hosts language courses the discounted Friends and Family rate.

Please contact us if you would like to take part in our Homestay programme.

Airport Transfers

Airport Transfers really depend on your budget. We have two airports that service Glasgow - Glasgow Airport and Prestwick Airport.

Glasgow Airport is about 20 minutes along the motorway from Glasgow City Centre and there is a good bus service that departs frequently and costs about £6 return.  It stops at various points in the centre.  Taxi service is more expensive, £40 (to the city centre, price will be higher if you are going beyond the city centre), but is more convenient and will take you direct to your homestay or accommodation.

Prestwick Airport is serviced by local trains, which takes about 1 hour.  The train station is right at the airport and goes direct into Central Station in Glasgow.  It costs about £6 return.  If your flight is late at night and is after the train service has finished, then there is a bus service that will take you to the city centre.  The cost of a taxi from Prestwick Airport is £80 for students.

Please see Glasgow and Prestwick Transfer for more information

Edinburgh Airport Transfer - the cost for a Taxi transfer from Edinburgh Airport is £95 and will take approximately 1 hour.
