Visa Information for Students Studying in the UK

Which visa do you require?

Students from outside Europe will normally require a visa to study in the UK. The type of visa that you require will depend on the country you are from, your age, the length of your course, and whether you want to bring dependents with you.

The UKBA guide to Studying in the UK provides all the information that you require to decide which visa is best for you.

If you are 18 or over and require a visa to study with Live Language, you have two options;

Student Visitor Visa

Students from outside Europe can come to the UK on a student visitor visa for up to 11 months if they are studying an English language course. At the end of the visa, they must return to their country, and they cannot extend or change their visa in the UK. They cannot undertake any paid or unpaid work while in the UK.

Students on visitor visas can come to study English at any level, and do not need to sit an official English exam before applying for their visas. Students who come on a student visitor visa cannot bring dependents or partners with them to the UK.

The Student Visitor Visa application form can be found here.

Tier 4 General Student Visa

Live Language was awarded Highly Trusted Sponsor Status by the UK Border Agency and is able to sponsor students who want to come to the UK to study full time English courses.

The General Student Visa is suitable for a student who wants to come to the UK to study an English course for at least 3 months and then go on to university or college in the UK. The general student visa allows you to extend your visa in the UK and also change to a different Tier category.

Students who want to apply for a General Student Visa must have a level of English which is B1 (Low Intermediate) level or above. They must sit a SELT approved English test before applying for the visa. A list of the accepted tests and the required results is available here. Students must also show academic progression when applying for the visa, and so will be required to show previous qualifications when applying.

Students applying for a General Student Visa, must also show that they have the full course fees available and £600 for each month of the course for living costs. For more information, please see the UKBA guidance.

Students who have a General Student Visa can bring partners and dependents, but cannot work in the UK if they are studying an English language course level.

The UKBA website also provides application forms for students applying for a visa outside of the UK and for students applying inside the UK.

Visas for Students Under 18 Years

Live Language can accept students who are under 18 who come to the UK on Child Visitor Visas. Students must be under 18 and can study for up to 6 months, then must return to their country. They cannot extend their visa in the UK or work while they are here. Please see the UKBA website here, for further information and application forms.
