Glasgow is a vibrant city that was European City of Culture in 1990, European City of Architecture and Design in 1999 and beat the competition to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. It hosts a wide range of museums (which are all free), art galleries, exhibitions and the city is well known for producing some world class rock music. It hosts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet not to mention its numerous theatres and concert venues. It is only 40 minutes from the capital – Edinburgh and 30 minutes from the start of the stunning Highlands. You therefore have the best of both the city and the remote highlands within easy access. Glasgow is well known for the warmth and hospitality of local people and it is this that makes Glasgow 'the friendliest city in Scotland'.

Glasgow is surrounded by the UK's biggest National Park, and is within fast and easy traveling distance to Edinburgh and Scotland's many varied attractions. You can enjoy breathtaking scenery, taste free samples at whisky distilleries or enjoy the clean air and tranquility of a loch-side stroll. For the more active, you can go horse riding, play golf on a Championship course, enjoy the thrill of white water rafting or even experience the exhilaration of a sky dive.

In August 2009, Glasgow was the 12th city of the Creative Cities Network established by UNESCO at the end of 2004 to promote the social, economic and cultural development.

MSN recently chose Glasgow as the Number 5 in the UK's best university towns. They picked the towns and cities they felt offered not only students, but also visitors, the whole package: great sights, sounds and activities, the most riotous nightlife and all-round atmosphere.

They also included the student satisfaction rate and all-important male-female ratio at each institution (both figures courtesy of the Telegraph), plus the estimated price of a pint in town.

The West Highland Line was recently voted "Best Rail Journey in the World" by Wanderlust magazine for the second year running. It runs from Glasgow to Mallaig three times a day (twice on Sundays), and it's brilliant.
