IELTS Preparation 25

Pre-IELTS & IELTS Preparation Course 25 hours (II25)

The IELTS course

This IELTS course is designed for students who are preparing for the IELTS exam over an extended period. The course helps you to pass the IELTS exam with the score you need. It is most suitable for students who need the strategies and techniques for the IELTS exam but who also require additional input on grammar and vocabulary. The course focuses on preparing you to meet the marking criteria of the writing and speaking parts of the exam and improves your technique for the reading and listening tests.

The IELTS course is offered at 2 levels, Pre-IELTS Preparation and IELTS Preparation. The courses have the same components but are graded to your level.

    • Pre-IELTS Preparation - Intermediate B1 level (IELTS 4.0 – 5.0)
    • IELTS Preparation - Upper Intermediate B2 level (IELTS 5.0 and above)
    • The Pre-IELTS Preparation (PI25) and IELTS Preparation 25 (IIP25) programmes comprise 3 components:
    • Pre-IELTS Preparation / IELTS Preparation (15 hours per week)
    • General English skills (7.5 hours per week)
    • Self – Study Module (minimum 2.5 hours per week)

IELTS Course outline

1. Pre-IELTS Preparation / IELTS preparation class

The IELTS preparation component focuses on developing vocabulary, grammar and techniques to help students improve their score in the IELTS exam. The courses will introduce the vocabulary and grammar, which will enhance your performance in the IELTS exam, covering the essential exam tasks such as describing a graph, writing an essay or discussing your opinion. You will be expected to continue to enrich your vocabulary outside of the school if you wish to achieve success in the IELTS exam. Your teacher shows you essential study techniques to help you expand your vocabulary effectively. The classes follow a core course book with supplementary materials to suit the needs of the group.

The courses focus on techniques and coping strategies to deal with all sections of the exam: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Each component is dealt with in great detail, including analysis of the marking criteria used by the examiners and provides you with extensive practice time using exam papers to improve their score. You will be able to see your improvement as you take a full practice test each week.

2. General English Class

The course is designed to be run in conjunction with the IELTS class to give our students a balance of exam and General English tuition. The class focuses on the grammar, vocabulary and skills, which are relevant to everyday life, and provides practice for these key areas. The class follows a course book but supplementary materials are used to match the needs of the students. Materials include CDs, DVDs and computer-based lessons.

3. Self-study Module

It is often difficult for students to make the jump from language study to full-time study at university. The Self-study module is designed to help you bridge this gap and make you a more independent learner. You complete a series of independent learning tasks out with classroom time with support from your teachers. These tasks will help you to develop essential skills such as doing research and use a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). Our library, class wiki and study centre are available to support you for this element of your course. For additional support, make an appointment with our Academic Support Tutor.

Testing and Assessment

You will be continually assessed on your performance in the classroom and be given at least one piece of written assessment per week. Homework is given on a daily basis but the most successful students invariably complete further independent study.

Tutorials are also carried out each month and are an opportunity to discuss academic goals, pastoral needs and level progression on a one-to-one basis with your tutor.

You can sit the IELTS exam all over the UK and the nearest test centres are Glasgow and Edinburgh.  Information on dates is available at Glasgow University or Basil Paterson Edinburgh.
